Pop For the Unpopular

Thank you Ted from Rock ‘n’ Roll Freaks for letting me share this amazing list.

Conversation with Machinist Man – “What were you really listening to in 1967 –  you were 10 years old…?” Me: “Well, you know, The Monkees and stuff, but me and Bunny Mellish would go into her older brother Eddie’s room and listen to The Fugs and The Mothers of Invention and smoke his cigarettes.” “The Fugs? You were 10 and listening to The Fugs?” “Yeah, then he caught us one time and we got into a lot of trouble. He narced on us and everything.” “Well, that explains a lot,” he says.

kitty Ukelele Lady

“Oh! I love dragonflies! They do my two favorite things at the same time…f*#king and flying,” said the mother of my (then) boyfriend as we sat on the beach of Leech Lake, watching two dragonflies cruise by. Leech Lake is named after a John Leech – it’s not filled with leeches. I looked at her and thought, “I’m gonna marry your son.”

It’s been 22 years since the tragic death of my mother-in-law, Kitty. She and her fiancé were killed when a semi ran a red light. I don’t know, do we grieve differently when it’s shocking like that?

The year after Kitty died, I felt the strong need to do a ceremony of some sort, and decided to get a tattoo in her honor. She had a tattoo on her right arm – she wanted to show that she was cool in case she was ever infirmed…

Oh, I haven’t written in so long….

Yeah, I know, I know, and I’m sorry, but you know, l’ve just been too busy. It’s like now I have to write and write and write for my bread and butter, baby, and when I get home, you know, I just don’t want to write another single solitary word. It’s like I am TAPPED OUT BABY. It’s like, you remember when I used to file at work all day and that was why I couldn’t organize anything at home? It’s like that, see, it’s just like that. You know, I’M TIRED. I’m just out of words, you know? You know I’ll make it up to you – I’ll save up all my words and oh yeah it’ll be great when I retire I’ll have so much time to just write what I wanna write and…what? My time is up? Oh. Nevermind.

L’Assassins Talk Garage Rock and Thee Headcoatees

Girl Germs

We’re so excited that L’Assassins will be paying tribute to Thee Headcoatees at the kickoff Girl Germs tribute night on May 30! We asked Monet of L’Assassins to tell us a little bit about The Headcoatees (who formed in England in 1991 as a backing band for a Billy Childish project, and eventually spawned the solo career of Holly Golightly) so everyone can do their homework before the show.

Thee Headcoatees

The basics: “They were most active in the ’90s and we really like songs from both the earlier and latter part of that decade,” says Monet. “Interestingly, I had known about Thee Headcoatees, but hadn’t really sought them out actively until a reviewer of our “Backseat Bomp”/”Go!” 7-inch compared us to the Delmonas (which was an early incarnation of Thee Headcoatees). I’d say we are bit more fans of Thee Headcoatees sound than the Delmonas – it evolved…

Through the shit......

Pay It Forward In Gratitude

What I have learned about myself is far more important than what I learn about others.

How I see myself is how I then see the world.

I translate how I see myself though expression.  How I express myself to the world and how I feel the world interacts with me begins with me. I don’t really give a fuck about a lot of things but the things I do care for.. well this is the place I express them, I want you to do the same.

I am giving this place as a place of sincere gratitude by paying it forward.

I am saying to each of you that cross my virtual threshold  I appreciate you, you help me in my journey to success.

Often the key to success are the tools and knowledge that they exist, among other things.

Bottom line, shit, is…

Meet a Match: Jordan and Tyler

Meet a Match: Jordan and Tyler

here’s my first post for Big Bros Big Sis

The BIG Blog

Pictured: Big Brother Jordan and Little Brother Tyler at Jordan’s wedding in June 2013.

“Just show up.” According to Jordan, that’s the secret to being a good Big Brother or Big Sister. And he should know; Jordan and his Little Brother, Tyler, have been matched for over eight years.

It may sound simple, but for Tyler, having a Big who shows up when he says he will has meant a lot. Tyler’s dad has been in and out of the picture, so Tyler really values Jordan’s stable influence. “I can talk to Jordan about anything, and I know he will listen to me, no matter what,” Tyler says.

Jordan and Tyler are as close as any brothers – so close that Jordan asked his Little to be a groomsman in his wedding. Nearly a year later, they are both still talking about what a special experience that was. For Tyler…
