1968 Olympics

Just watched “Salute,” an amazing documentary about Peter Norman, the Australian silver medal winner in the 200 track metre at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. He’s the white guy standing with John Carlos and Tommie Smith as they made their famous Black Power gesture when receiving their medals, a symbol that sent shockwaves throughout the world. The film is focused on Peter’s story and is done by his nephew, Matt Norman, but gives all of the background story about the events leading up to the moment of the medal ceremony, and the context behind why this was such a significant and powerful moment in Olympic and Civil Rights’ history. John Carlos, Tommie Smith and Peter Norman are all interviewed together many years later, and give their accounts as to how this event happened and the bonds they continued to share. Very moving film.
