I’ll start my ABOUT THIS AND THAT, AND THAT OTHER THING with a bunch of babbling, which will give readers an indication of what this, my first blog, will be about. Nothing earth-shattering. I am writing just for the sake of writing. Because I can. It’ll be lots of stuff about music and radio shows, familial folklore, the sordid details of my growing up in New Jersey and Detroit and other places I’ve lived, and my random thought patterns – all depending on my mood o’the day. Oh, and dogs. I’ve been a volunteer d.j. at nonprofit community radio station KFAI, 90.3 Mpls and 106.7 F.M. St. Paul a/k/a Rev Lac’s marvelous album of that name. PFTU seems to be a name that fits for a blog I guess. Are you or have you ever been unpopular? Please feel free to comment, but be gentle, I’m very, very sensitive. Not really – attending high school in the Downriver Detroit area sort of cures a person of that….
I’ve completed a Public Relations Specialist program and am transitioning into the Communications and PR field after having had a long career as a legal administrative assistant (you know, a solid, great paying job that was sucking the life out of my soul.)
After 7 months of doing communications and grant-writing at Isuroon, a Somali women’s advocacy nonprofit, I have decided to move on and develop my own contract business. I’ve learned a great deal at Isuroon and have gained a great appreciation for Somali culture. I now know what kinds of struggles my Somali neighbors are experiencing in my community.
As part of my contract work, I act as the communications maven for the M2 Foundation. They are really doing ground-breaking work and I’m kind of giddy to be a part of it all! I am also continuing to contract with the African Development Center as a writer and communications consultant. I’m looking forward to telling ADC’s stories and to spreading the great work they’re doing in the Twin Cities. It’s all good and I look forward to expanding and moving ahead with communications work with a focus on the area of nonprofits.
Speaking of nonprofits, I serve on KFAI’s board and have just been elected as the prez of the board. I’m really charged up to help lead the board into a good direction so that we can help the station survive and thrive. It’s truly a labor of love and I’m putting my heart and soul into all the efforts and actions I make.
